Backend Engineer (Contract)

Location: Remote (UK or EU only)


About us:

Unbound is a preventative health digital clinic. We’re a dynamic and innovative early-stage startup on a mission to empower individuals to take control of their health through a holistic, tech-driven approach.

As we build out our Engineering Team, we’re looking for an experienced Backend/Full-stack Engineer to work across both our API, consumer-facing web app and internal tools.

This contract role is open to candidates based in the UK or EU only.

We require 5+ years of commercial experience in software engineering and a minimum of 3 years hands-on experience with backend technologies.

What You’ll Do:

● Design, build, and maintain backend services using NestJS and Postgres

Develop and maintain APIs that power our web, mobile apps and internal tools ● Contribute to product and architecture decisions in a fast-moving environment ● Ensure scalability, security, and reliability of backend systems ● Support integration of AI-powered features and workflows ● Contribute to frontend features in React / Next.js as needed

What We’re Looking For: ● Strong backend engineering skills: NestJS, Postgres, API design

● Solid understanding of modern backend practices (testing, CI/CD, cloud infra) ● Experience designing scalable, maintainable systems ● Frontend exposure: React, Next.js, TypeScript, React Native ● Product-oriented mindset with focus on reliability and performance ● Comfortable working in a small, agile, early-stage team


Nice to have

● Interest in AI and new developer tools (e.g. Cursor AI, Claude Code)

● Familiarity with React Native

● Previous experience in Health Tech or regulated environments

● Background in early-stage startups
